Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Celebrates 75th Anniversary!

Posted by Administrator on 8/17/2012

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese! I'll admit, I've been a fan of this blue box favorite since my childhood! Now, my own children also share my enthusiasm! My daughter especially loves it... and we have a great memory that proves it! One Christmas morning, amongst all the presents throughout the room... the first thing she sees is a pile of blue boxes, and she shouts with utter excitement "Santa brought me Mac & Cheese!!". Apparently, Santa knows children well! So, does Kraft... since they've carried this successful product for 75 years! In honor of their success, we'd like to share some of their past advertisements with you.

I particularly like this advertisement to the left that illustrates how inexpensive Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is. Of course... it's a bit more than a nickel for lunch now... but it's still not terribly expensive. By my estimate, even after you add in butter and milk you're probably about in the $0.50 region for cost. Not a bad cost... but it does show how much food prices have gone up in the past 50 years! (ten times the amount!). If all food prices increase by that amount, Mac & Cheese might be all we can afford!
I think the picture to the right helps to illustrate the main thing that appeals to parents. It is a pretty easy meal to prepare. And... although on it's own... it's probably not the best meal. If you incorporate some vegetables and meat, it can certainly fit into a balanced diet. It is interesting to see how the plate from the 70's era advertisement to the right is divided. If you followed today's MyPlate recommendations, the Mac & Cheese would only be about a quarter of the plate. Still... I think we can all enjoy an occasional guilty splurge to reconnect with our past childhood.
